6 Green innovations used on job sites that support an eco-friendly future.

  wind turbines According to the Rhodium study there was an increase in industrial emissions by 2.2 percent last year. This combined with the jump of 4.4 percent from last year’s oil, gas, agriculture, waste, and land use is the reason why our fellow construction workers/companies have been taking an effort to go green in the workplace. In 2019 alone however, we were 17 percent below the emissions that were created in 2005. So, to keep a good trend going, our workforce is going the extra mile to create a eco-friendlier tomorrow. These are just a few of the eco-friendly products and efforts that are used in the workforce for sustainability.
  • Nanocrystal’s in smart windows: To improve the success of smart technology, scientists are incorporating nanomaterials into the windows. With the help of the nanomaterials inside of the smart windows in the workplace, they can reduce costs, improve coloration, perform longer cycle lives, and faster switching times. They are quite savvy since they are able to allow light in while blocking out the heat from the outside; which helps lower carbon emission.
  • Pollution absorbing brick: The Breathe Brick developed byCarmen Trudell, an assistant professor at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s school of architecture and founder of Both Landscape and Architecture. Designed this out of concrete and recycled plastic, this brick is to be a part of a buildings ventilations system. The special part of this breathing brick however is in the center, with the use of a cyclone filtration similar to vacuum cleaners. This is where it separates out the heavy pollutants from the air and drops the particles into a hamper at the walls base for a clean disposal.
  • Biochar: A charcoal like substance that is created from burning organic material from biomass (agricultural and forestry waste) in a controlled process known as pyrolysis. This charcoal like substance is able to reduce contamination in the workplace and safely store carbon. It was actually inspired by an ancient Amazonian practice. It costs little to produce and can provide us with sustainable self-reliant buildings.
  • Hydro ceramics: This ceramic tile like creation performs a thermodynamic process in buildings that utilizes a material known as hydrogel; which has highly evaporative properties. Once the hydrogel was combined with the thermal humidity control properties of clay, then the heat and water responsive material was perfected. With this sustainable invention, it will create a passive evaporation system on buildings that will lower the temperature of the interior by 5 degrees. This will help lower carbon emissions greatly.
  • Invisible solar cells: Covering more surface area than visible regular solar cell panels, the U.S. could harvest 40 percent of the energy that it uses yearly. They are able to coat windows and building surfaces while generating just as much power as regular solar panels placed on rooftops. There is an estimated 5-7 billion of window and building surfaces that is available for these solar cells to be used in the future.
  • Aluminum foam: A cellular structure that is made up of mostly gas-filled pores and a solid metal like aluminum. Perfect for stabilizing a structure like a building, without increasing the structures mass. Ideal for cladding and is 100 percent recyclable. This foam is a thermal heat exchanger as well.
Though many of these new inventions have just begun to enter the workforce for commercial construction, they are already beginning to make an impact.
